Enrollment
  • The National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) is a government-run public healthcare program in Korea. Once enrolled and paying the required insurance fee, foreign nationals are entitled to the same healthcare benefits as Korean citizens, including reduced medical costs and access to regular health checkups.
  • Under the National Health Insurance Act and relevant Ministry of Education policies, all international students (D-2 visa) and overseas Korean students (F-4 visa) are required to enroll in NHIS during their stay in Korea.
  • NHIS Enrollment Process by Visa Type
    - D-2 visa holders: Automatically enrolled upon completion of Alien Registration
    - F-4 visa holders: Automatically enrolled after 6 months of stay in Korea

※ Immediate enrollment requires a separate application to NHIS (certificate of enrollment required).

※ Students registered as dependents under their parents’ NHIS plan are not required to enroll separately.

Insurance Fee
  • International students (D-2 visa holders) are eligible for a 50% reduction on the standard NHIS fee, paying approximately KRW 80,000 per month (KRW 76,390 as of 2025).
  • Overseas Korean students (F-4 visa holders) are normally charged the full monthly fee (KRW 152,780 as of 2025). However, the same 50% reduction may be applied upon submission of a certificate of enrollment to NHIS.
  • NHIS fees are subject to change.
Insurance Billing & Payment

Billing

The NHIS insurance bill is sent by mail to the address registered during Alien Registration or domestic residence reporting (typically delivered around the 15th of each month).

Payment Deadline

The insurance fee must be paid in advance by the 25th of each month for the following month (e.g., April’s insurance fee must be paid by March 25).

※ Failure to pay may result in disadvantages in visa extension or immigration procedures.

Discount for Online Notification & Automatic Transfer

By applying for both services, you may receive a discount of up to 400 KRW per month.

  • Online Notification: Receive your bill via email or mobile phone instead of by paper.
  • Automatic Transfer: Fees will be automatically deducted from your bank account on the 25th of each month
  • How to apply: Please download the NHIS 25 (건강보험 25시) application and follow the instructions in it

Private Insurance (*Optional)

  • NHIS coverage alone may not fully cover all medical expenses. To ensure broader coverage, especially in emergency situations, enrollment in private insurance is recommended.
  • However, private insurance cannot replace NHIS, and enrollment in NHIS remains mandatory regardless of private insurance coverage.
  • The university does not recommend specific insurance companies or plans. Students are advised to review available options and choose a private insurance plan independently based on their individual needs.
  • For students who find it difficult to choose from the wide range of private insurance options and fees, the GSC may offer a group private insurance program at the beginning of each semester. Students interested in group enrollment should refer to the application email sent by the GSC.

※ Please note that the group private insurance program may not be available every semester, depending on circumstances.
