Part-time Work

Important Notes

  • Part-time employment permission must be obtained before starting work.
  • The work start date must be after the expected approval date for the permission.

    ※ Violating this will be considered illegal employment.

  • Extra semester students or students with a GPA below 2.0 in the previous semester are not eligible to apply.
  • The student must report the change in workplace within 15 days of occurrence.

    ※ He/she can change the place with different employer within the permitted period of part-time work. The report can be made by visiting Sejongno Immigration Office in person.

About Part-time Work

By regulation, international students are not allowed to work and earn income while on a student (D-2) visa. It is only possible for international students with a student visa to apply for part-time work if permission is granted by the immigration office.
Please keep in mind that it is illegal to work without prior permission from the immigration office and GSC.
In order to request for approval, students must first prepare the ‘Part-Time Work of Foreign Student Confirmation Form’ and other supporting documents,

Eligibility

Applicant Eligibility

  • Registration Card (RC) with student visa (D-2)
  • GPA over C (2.0) in the previous semester *on the date of application
  • Currently enrolled at KU (less than 8 semesters of enrollment)students taking extra semester(s) CANNOT apply for part-time work

Who are the students taking extra semester(s)? (on the date of application)
General students: have registered 9 semesters or more (Architecture department: 11semesters or more)
Transfer students: have registered 5 semesters or more (Architecture department: 7 semesters or more)

  • * Only official TOPIK score reports are accepted; it cannot be replaced with KU Korean Language Center certificates
  • * If the student is majoring in International Studies (as 1st major), he/she needs to submit the proof issued from the affiliated department office that all of his/her classes are held in English; TOPIK score report may not be needed
  • but English Certificates: TOEFL 530(CBT 197, iBT 71), IELTS 5.5, CEFR B2, TEPS 601(NEW TEPS 327) or above are needed

    ※ Students who is majoring in International Studies(as 1st major) and from the countries which have English as mother language or common language

Fields Available for Part-Time Work

Examples of Allowed Types of Part-Time Work (permission needed)

  • Working as an assistant for the jobs falling under E-1~E-7
    (Ex: Working as a substitute interpreter X
    Working as an assistant for an interpreter O)
  • Internships falling under E-1~E-7 with D-2-7 visa
  • Internships falling under E-1~E-7 with D-2-2 visa during the vacation
  • Paid Research Activities within the University
    – Cases in which research stipends or allowances are paid by the university, industry-academic cooperation foundations, etc.

    • Paid research activities related to academic studies
    • Paid research activities not related to academic studies
  • Paid Research Activities related to academic studies at Other University

Restricted Types of Part-Time Work

  • Private tutoring
    Delivery worker, replacement driver, insurance agent, door-to-door salesman, home study teacher(ex: Kumon)
  • Types of work falling under E-1~E-7
  • Construction, Manufacturing of E-9, types of work falling under E-10
    * Exceptionally allowed when having TOPIK level 4 or above
  • Works at foreign language educational institution for the minor (English Café for kids, English Camp, etc.)
    Exceptionally allowed for permission if: Working as safety assistants and play assistants at an English Kids cafe or English camp with a certificate of criminal history record issued by one's national government & a physical examination form for recruitment issued by the medical institution designated by the Ministry of Justice (including drug test results)
  • Any other fields that are against the social order and virtue (Ex. Adult entertainment, casino, etc)
  • Work by dispatch, subcontract, meditation
  • Working from a distance
  • Paid research activities not related to academic studies at Other University

Types of Part-Time Work Exempted from Permission (permission not needed)

Working at the home institution as a class assistant, librarian, etc

  • Temporary assisting of house chore or office work
  • Participation in a movie, show, or event for once only
  • Participation in Field training semester in accordance with regulations and laws by Ministry of Education

  • Interpreter as an intermittent worker appointed by Commissioner General of the Korean National Police Agency
    (except for recruited professional interpreter)

3. Copy of the Certificate of Business Registration (of the workplace)

4. Standard Employment Contract

(Working hours and hourly wage must be stated)

5. Transcript of the previous semester

New students are not required to submit in the first semester.

6. Proof of Korean Language Proficiency

(For the International Studies students, English proficiency proof is also acceptable: Please refer to the GSC website)

7. Confirmation of compliance with international student part-time employment requirements

(if Manufacturing or Construction is one of the business types)

8. Copy of Employers’ ID card

(if Manufacturing or Construction is one of the business types)

9. Supervisor’s Confirmation Form, College Dean’s Recommendation Letter
